The Importance of Retirement Planning in the Oil and Gas Industry

Your retirement decisions are connected. When you leave work, how you use your savings and what you do with employer benefits all deserve a place in the same conversation.

For oil and gas professionals, that also means looking at how much of your financial life is tied to one employer or industry. These six areas can help you organize the questions that matter to your household.

Key Components of a Tailored Retirement Plan

  1. Start with your household. Review assets, liabilities, income and spending, including near-term obligations and possible changes.

  2. Compare retirement choices. Consider when you might retire, the spending you want to support and the assumptions used to evaluate alternative withdrawal paths.

  3. Gather benefit information. Start with the plan documents and deadlines relevant to your situation. Together, we’ll identify the questions to address, agree on the scope of our review and determine where specialized professional input may be needed.

  4. Review investment exposure. Consider company stock and industry exposure alongside the rest of your holdings, spending needs and risk. Diversification does not eliminate investment losses, and changing appreciated holdings can have tax consequences.

  5. Include health-coverage questions. Consider coverage costs before and after Medicare eligibility. We review existing coverage in the context of personal planning and coordinate questions with your insurance professional; we do not sell insurance.

  6. Coordinate estate priorities. Review beneficiary and estate-planning questions with your attorney. Personal financial planning does not replace legal advice or document preparation.
